Greens MLC Greg Barber has learnt that the new order for 50 trams, due to begin arriving in late 2012, will not meet federal standards for wheelchair accessibility.  Using the Freedom of Information Act, we obtained a memo to the former transport minister, Martin Pakula authorising the purchase of new trams, but noting they would not comply with the Disability Discrimination Act. The Act requires that the gap between the tram and the platform be no more than 12mm high and 40mm wide.
