Greens MP for the Western Suburbs, Colleen Hartland, has welcomed the Maribyrnong City Council Truck Curfew Review but has cautioned that its outcomes will be hampered unless the State Government commits to building the shovel ready Truck Bypass.
"In the Inner West we have more than 21,000 trucks on our streets every single day. Moore Street, Footscray, for example, has seen a massive increase in truck traffic in recent years and residents can't sleep due to the stream of trucks past their front door at night. Anyone who lives here could tell you that current truck curfews are inadequate & need to be reviewed" " said Colleen Hartland.
"The serious health and well-being issues caused by growing truck traffic are of great concern to the community, especially since a recent World Health Organisation report confirmed that diesel fumes cause cancer"
"This Review has great potential to deliver positive health and well-being outcomes for the inner west community but only if complemented by a commitment from the state government to build the Truck Bypass. But without this commitment the outcomes of the Review will be hampered"
"It is time this truck traffic problem was fixed and we have the solutions - I call on the Baillieu government to commit to building the shovel ready Truck Bypass" said Ms Hartland.
