Western Suburbs Greens MP Colleen Hartland says Wyndham Council will be forced to cover the entire cost of new kindergartens as Ted Baillieu cuts all funding for building and upgrading kindergartens.
"Before the election Ted Baillieu promised to eliminate unfunded cost shifting to local councils *," said Colleen Hartland.
"Wyndham parents are having 60 new babies a week," said Colleen Hartland. "We could almost fill a new kindergarten or at least a new room every week."
"This is blatant cost shifting from the Baillieu Government. They've cut all the funding even though the demand is growing rapidly - if Wyndham Council doesn't pick up the tab then families will miss out."
"With a rapidly growing population Wyndham Council's budget is already overstretched. This additional burden will man either other services and infrastructure miss out or kinders miss out. Either way, families will suffer."
"Ted Baillieu promised * to ease the burden on local councils and put an end to cost shifting. This is another promise broken from a government that is making a habit of breaking their election commitments."
"We are the fastest growing region in Australia. I'm not sure if Ted Baillieu has been out here but maybe someone forgot to tell him. Message to Mr Baillieu - this means we're going to need kindergartens."
